June 28, 2025 press

After three groundbreaking seasons, Squid Game has left fans wondering if a season 4 of the Netflix original will ever grace our screens. If you happen to be one of those fans, here’s everything we know about the possible continuation of the Korean drama and its rumoured spin-off.

Spoilers ahead!

Squid Game season 3 premiered worldwide on Netflix on 27 June 2025 and instantly sparked a wave of speculation. In its six high-stakes episodes, viewers witnessed shocking deaths, multiple unsettling revelations and Gi-hun’s (played by Lee Jung-jae) ultimate sacrifice.

Talking to Netflix about season 3, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “The message I wanted to communicate was that if we solely pursue our immediate self-interest, and refuse to self-restraint, sacrifice, or bear any costs, and if we don’t put our heads together, we have no future.”

What happened at the end of Squid Game season 3?

The ending of Squid Game season 3 left fans with more questions than answers.

Six months after Gi-hun’s death, the story shifted to Los Angeles, where The Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) visited Gi-hun’s daughter. There, he handed over his belongings to her, most notably his green tracksuit and a gold card holding his prize money.

But the real twist came in the final scene. As The Front Man drove through Downtown Los Angeles, he heard a familiar sound, the sharp crack of Ddakji tiles slapping the pavement. Glancing over, he spotted a woman in a black suit (played by Cate Blanchett) challenging a passerby to the same game that began it all. The stakes were identical: lose the round, and you get slapped.

Blanchett’s surprise special appearance in a role mirroring Gong Yoo’s original “Salesman” was a quiet confirmation that Squid Game had gone global.

Reflecting on the finale, lead actor Lee Byung-hun remarked, “I thought it was an incredible ending that no one could predict. Despite all the noble efforts of so many people, the world still continues as it was before.”

Could Squid Game season 4 happen?

As of now, Squid Game will not return for season 4 on Netflix.

According to the OTT giant, director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that season 3, episode 6 was conceived as the definitive and planned series finale. The story arc reached its intended conclusion, and no continuation is currently in development. While the global scope has sparked speculation, the creators have stated that season 3 marks the end of the main series.

Could there be a Squid Game spin-off?

While there’s no official confirmation so far, Cate Blanchett slapping a homeless man during a Ddakji game in Los Angeles in season 3 is widely being looked at as a soft launch for an upcoming US spin-off.

Additionally, in Netflix’s Squid Game in Conversation, creator Hwang teased why the world of the show is still open for more stories.

“In this story, Squid Game is hosted by a specific group of people, but it serves as a metaphor for the real world, where capitalism fuels relentless competition. So until that ends, the game will not end,” he said.

He further stated that while the game in Korea ended with Gi-hun’s sacrifice, “but I wanted to show that the game was still ongoing elsewhere and that the world had not changed that much. We wanted to say: this isn’t really over. Plus, if it was totally wrapped up, our fans would be sad, and we wouldn’t have a reason to come back.”

More about the Squid Game spin-off

Rumours about the US spin-off began as early as 2023, with multiple insiders reporting that David Fincher was tied to the project. Meanwhile, Dennis Kelly, best known for the British thriller Utopia(2013), was reported as the head writer.

According to What’s on Netflix (via ProductionWeekly), the project is set to serve as a continuation ofSquid Game, rather than a direct remake.
